Detection of X-ray emission from classical novae in their post-outburst stages provides unique information about the explosion mechanism. The analysis of the emission in soft X-rays enables a deep study of the remaining hot nuclear burning shell, whereas hard X-rays provide diagnostics of the internal or external shocks in the nova shells and/or about the recovery of accretion. The unprecedented sensitivity and spectral resolution of XMM instruments will permit to deduce crucial parameters of the nova evolution, i.e., mass of the white dwarf, turn-off timescale, mass burned into helium, if burning is still on, and properties of the ejecta and/or the recovered accretion stream. In this proposal we suggest the observation of 3 recent novae, which exploded in 2005.
