Neutron diffraction experiments show that the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order and the suppression of ordered magnetism in Co and Ni substituted BaFe2As2 appear consistent with a simple band-filling model. For Cu, however, the magnetic phase diagram does not display incommensurate order demonstrating that a rigid-band approach breaks down. Motivated by the observed differences in magnetic ordering and strong suppression of superconductivity with Cu substitution, we performed inelastic magnetic scattering measurements on Ba(Fe1-xMx)2As2 (M = Co, Cu) which show that the normal state spin fluctuation spectra are indistinguishable. These results suggest that impurity effects in the Fe plane play a significant role in controlling magnetism and the appearance of superconductivity.
