Scientific paper

A statistical analysis of observations of major magnetic storms for the period 1934-1947 (Allen and Dunkan, 1975) has shown that the repeated occurrence of these storms and the solar-wind jets that cause them is increased for certain planetary phases. This indicates that planetary gravitation may produce convective motions in the solar wind and lead to the development of jets in regions of such convection as a consequence of hydromagnetic instability.
