Scientific paper

The paper proposes a possible mechanism for the transverse acceleration of ions in the auroral ionosphere for which the ion velocity distribution function is significantly non-Maxwellian. The proposed mechanism, which involves the energizing of ionospheric ions, can be used to explain ascending fluxes of positive ions with a conical pitch-angle distribution in the upper ionosphere.
