Earth Ionosphere: Electron Densities
Scientific paper
Data on the amplitude and drift velocity of auroral scattering obtained in the STARE experiment of November 17, 1983, were used in estimating the mean electron density in the ionospheric E layer in the region where measurements were made simultaneously using the EISKAT incoherent scattering apparatus. It is shown that the electron density values predicted using STARE data differ from the real data measured by the EISKAT apparatus by a factor not greater than 2 and in 70% of the cases by not more than a factor of 1.5. The possible reasons for the noncorrespondence of measurements and the ways to increase accuracy in the radar method for diagnosis of ionospheric electron density are discussed.
