Current Sheets: Solar Wind
Scientific paper
A method for tracking the orientation of the current sheet in the corona and sources of high-velocity solar-wind streams on the basis of observations of large-scale magnetic fields on the Sun is proposed. Photospheric magnetic fields in a potential approximation are extrapolated into the upper layers of the solar atmosphere, into the region of the postulated formation of the solar wind and planetary magnetic field. The computed magnetic field is used in plotting a map of isoclinic lines: lines of equal slope of the field vector to the surface of a sphere of radius R = 1.8 Rsun. The construction of such maps each day makes possible continuous tracking of the large-scale structure and evolution of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field. A comparison of the maps of isoclinic lines and geomagnetic activity for October 1982 indicated the fundamental possibility of use of this method for prognostic purposes.
