The Student Nitric Oxide Explorer (SNOE) satellite began measuring the solar soft x-ray flux in March of 1998. The making the measurements uses photodiodes with metal filters to select broad wavelength bands. These measurements overlap high precision satellite drag measurements for the GFZ satellite, which ended in April of 1999. While it is well known that the solar soft x-ray flux (wavelengths < 30 nm) is strongly correlated with variations in the neutral density, which are responsible for satellite drag, it has not been clearly established that broad band measurements, such as those available from SNOE, can improve the specification and prediction of variations in neutral density. Even though the GFZ data available for analysis are averages over 5 days, which eliminates a significant portion of the short term variation, the correlation of the solar soft x-ray measurements with the unexpected variations in satellite drag (the deviations between the observed drag and that calculated using the currently available proxies such as F10.7) are significant. Temporal differences between the solar soft x-ray signals and the drag data are also observed, with the solar flux variations leading the deviations in the drag data by approximately half a day. This indicates that even broadband solar soft x-ray measurements could be used to significantly improve the specification and prediction of neutral densities.
