Infrared luminous galaxies, while relatively rare in the local universe, are far more common at high redshifts. Intimately linked with dynamical interaction and blackhole accretion, they mark an important stage in the history of galaxy formation and evolution. Our Spitzer GO- 1 program has discovered a new, large sample of z~ 2 ULIRGs. The uniqueness of this sample is its Spitzer mid-IR spectra, which yield redshifts and a rich suite of mid-IR spectral diagnostics. We propose to obtain near-IR spectra for a subset of this sample using GEMINI- N/NIRI. The rest-frame optical and the mid-IR spectra together will allow a comprehensive study of gas, stars and dust in high-z ULIRGs. Specifically, we will (1) compare SFR based on H_(alpha) and far- IR luminosity, and understand the extinction; (2) study physical properties such as age of starburst using H_(alpha) equivalent width, gas kinematics from the line width, gas metallicities and optical AGN/starburst diagnostics using emission line ratios; (3) obtain more accurate redshifts so that it is possible to use current mm instruments for CO detections; (4) compare our sample with SCUBA galaxies, and establish if the Spitzer sources are a new population of ULIRGs at z~2.
