Since the early 1950's, the development of nuclear weapons has introduced radionuclides into the environment, including radiocesium (Cs-137). Researchers have incorporated several methodologies in the identification of these isotopes and their behavior in sediments. Here we discussed three main methods used and provide study cases. Studies at Emerson Point in Tampa Bay and several sites in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico have utilized these methodologies. The analysis of sediment grain size, the detection of radioactivity level and the identification of sediment mineralogy have been used as tools with the purpose of obtaining specific sediment data and information. Prior to analysis, sediment core samples taken at study areas were extruded, sliced into 0.5 cm for the top 10 cm and 1 cm there after and weighed. Sediment grain size analysis was done using the Micromeritics Saturn Digisizer 5200 connected to the Saturn Digisizer 2500 software to determine percentage of sand, silt and clay particles in the sediment samples. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) is used to study crystalline structures and mineralogy of clays. Detection of radioactivity level is determined by using Canberra gamma well detectors connected to APEX software which provides radionuclide specific energy peaks for the radionuclide of interest. The results of the sample of EV (El Verde surface) shows the highest value for silt (81.36%) and the lowest clay concentration is 5.8%. Emerson Point shows the highest concentration of silt (95.29%) and the lowest clay concentration is 0.41%.
