Atmospheric tidal parameters obtained simultaneously at Punta Borinquen (18 deg N) and Monpazier (44 deg N) by meteor radar are considered, and the data are compared to a tidal excitation and propagation model developed by Bernard (1978, 1981), which describes tides at every latitude and is used to compare low and midlatitude observations. Both stations measured the zonal wind component between 80 and 105 km. Zonal wind values were obtained on an hourly basis on a 1-km step vertical grid; a Fourier harmonic analysis was applied and the wind spectrum at each altitude and the characteristics of the main peaks corresponding to the tides were noted. A description and a comparison of the diurnal, semidiurnal, and terdiurnal tide data are presented for the two locations. It is shown that Bernard's model is a good representation of the latitudinal structure of the diurnal and semidiurnal tides, and of their seasonal behavior. The only major discrepancy concerns the phase observed at low latitudes (and in the summer at midlatitude) on the semidiurnal tide, which leads the theoretical phase by 2 to 3 h. It is concluded that it is not possible to separate the effect of the relative variation of the different tidal modes or the effect of the possible nonsolar migrating modes using data from only two stations.
