A comparative study is presented of the latitude variations of the total energy content and of the energy distribution vs frequency of gravity waves with periods lying between 2 and 8 h, and vertical wavelengths longer than 5 km. Data were obtained simultaneously from 25 recording runs lasting from 5 to 30 days by portable meteor radars at different latitudes at Kiruna, Sweden (68 deg N, 20 deg E); Garchy (47 deg N, 3 deg E) and Monpazier (44 deg N, 1 deg E), France; and Punta Borinquen (18 deg N, 67 deg W), Puerto Rico. It is concluded that the gravity waves observed at low latitudes are similar to the waves observed at higher latitudes. However, the energy content does not seem to vary with latitude; the distribution of the energy with frequency is slightly steeper at high latitudes than at low.
