A proposal is made concerning the dynamical definition of hypermomentum as the variation of the material Lagrangian density with respect to the affine connection in a space. A dualistic field theory is considered and completed by introducing an action function for the gravitational field expressed in geometrical variables. Attention is given to the gravitational field Lagrangian and the proper hypermomentum in general relativity.
