A detailed analytical study of the maser synchrotron instability is presented, examining its relevance to the explanation of auroral kilometric radiation. The dispersion relation of the X mode is established, and it is shown that it is sufficient to consider only the contribution of the right-handed part of the current. The dispersion relation is solved, obtaining simple analytical expressions which are useful for investigating the role played by the shape of the distribution function and by the other plasma parameters. The expressions allow optimization of the spatial growth rate. The transition between a kinetic regime and a semihydrodynamic regime is studied, and the nonlinear saturation of the synchrotron maser instability is examined.
