Hst Proposal Id #7459 Clusters Of Galaxies

Scientific paper

Our WFPC2 observations of the field around the radio galaxy 53W002 {z=2.39} have discovered a remarkable population of Lyman Alpha emission-line objects at the same redshift, with 18 identified in a single WFPC2 mosaic. They are small and blue, with bulge-like profiles of effective radius 0.5-1 kpc. We surmise that these are part of the population of protogalaxies, most of which are faint enough to have escaped ground-based searches. We propose NICMOS observations of these objects to address some of the basic questions their presence raises: {1} When did they begin star formation? {2} Do the young stars trace their whole extents, or are they embedded in older stellar halos? {3} What is the gas metallicity in star- forming objects at z=2.4, and how dusty are they? A combination of direct imaging and grism observations with NICMOS proves very effective in addressing these, measuring age indicators in the stellar continuum, the profile of the emitted U-to-R light, and familiar ``optical" emission-line ratios. This is the richest known aggregate of galaxies at such redshifts, and thus a unique opportunity to study a whole population of such young {proto?}galaxies.
