We propose up to 3 TOO EPIC-pn observations of the hard states of the BHXRBs Cyg X-1, GX 339-4 and SWIFT J1753.5-0127, to be triggered by a significant change in their timing signatures with respect to those seen in earlier hard state observations. In this way, we will confirm or disprove the standard picture of the hard state where correlated timing and spectral properties are caused by truncation of the accretion disk. We will use rms-spectra to disentangle the intrinsic and reprocessed contributions to disk thermal emission, and determine whether the enhanced disk variability seen on longer time-scales is associated with the low-frequency Lorentzian in the PSD, which would for the first time identify this key timing signature with the disk.
