An approximate analytical formula for the electron velocity distribution in an electron beam traveling a finite length in a plasma was derived previously in order to develop a semianalytical method for computing one-dimensional plasma waves excited by the beam electrons. The equation for one-dimensional plasma waves is extended to three-dimensional waves on the assumption that the beam electron velocity distribution is one-dimensional. Equations for the solar radio flux density expected at earth are given for the first, second, and third harmonics; self-absorption is taken into account for the first and second harmonics. The fundamental is attributed to plasma-wave scattering by thermal ions, the second harmonic to the coalescence of two plasma waves, and the third harmonic to coalescence of the second-harmonic radio wave and a plasma wave. The semianalytical method is then used to simulate normal type III radio bursts over the frequency range from 30 kHz to 200 MHz. The results show that the second-harmonic radio emission is dominant over almost the entire frequency range considered.
