The coupled statistical-equilibrium and transfer equations for a 20-level model of the C III ion are solved in the analysis of the C III triplet lines, and it is found that emission in the 3p-3d transition 9710 A line and absorption in the 3s-3p 4650 A line is predicted, in agreement with observation. The equation of transfer and the equations of statistical equilibrium are solved simultaneously, using a program based on a modified method of complete linearization. The model adopted for the C III atom includes the ground state, 16 excited C III levels, the 2s and 2p levels of the C IV state, and the growth level of the C V state. Another 49 levels are taken into account in a description of the dielectronic recombination process.
