By studying high-order harmonic generation in solids, we demonstrate that the numerical non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism is a powerful tool for addressing spectroscopy in the time domain. The Keldysh formalism allows for broken time-translation invariance making it ideally suited for the study of time domain phenomena. We consider the effect of three different conditions on the generation of high-order harmonics in solids: impurity scattering in the Born limit, varying pulse characteristics, and inclusion of specific parameters through realistic band structure. We reproduce many observed characteristics of high harmonic generation experiments in solids including the formation of only odd harmonics in inversion-symmetric materials, the nonlinear formation of high harmonics with nearly constant amplitude, and a cutoff in harmonic frequencies proportional to the maximum applied field amplitude.
