The ATS 6 radio beacon experiments can measure the ionospheric electron content by two techniques: the Faraday rotation technique and the group delay technique. A model study is used to simulate the nature and limitations of these two techniques which together can be used to continuously monitor the plasmasphere. Two periods were chosen to show the behavior of the plasmasphere: a magnetically quiet period in August 1974, and a period in October 1974 with three successive magnetic storms.
