Measurements of profiles and intensities of the (S III) 9531-A line in M17 are presented. From the comparison with those of lines in other wavelength regions an extinction map is derived. Line splitting up to 30 km/s is observed in the central region of M17, caused by ionized gas sheets streaming away from the ionization fronts of the cone shaped H II region. Close to the interface region between ionized and molecular clouds, where A(v) reaches 10 mag, internal extinction in the H II gas of approximately 1 mag is found. In the eastern arc-like filament a velocity component at -25 km/s with respect to the M17 complex is detected.
