It is found that the main families of orbits in a realistic model of a spiral galaxy enhance the spiral arms up to the resonance epicyclic frequency/angular velocity in the rotating frame = 4/1. Beyond this resonance the response density is out of phase, if the density excess is strong enough. Therefore strong spirals seem to terminate near the 4/1 resonance. If the amplitude is very small the response is in phase up to corotation; thus the results of the linear theory are recovered. The same results are derived by considering the motions of gas clouds that undergo collisions at each spiral arm.
