Results on the fluid dynamics of relativistic shocks waves are used to determine the spectral index of particles accelerated by the Fermi process. The distributions of Fermi-accelerated particles at shocks propagating into both cold proton-electron plasmas and cold electron-positron plasmas are obtained. It is demonstrated that the spectral index of the accelerated particles depends on the wave power spectrum. Results are presented in terms of the spectral index of the synchrotron emission from the accelerated electrons.
