The effects of misalignment in double-mirror telescopes due to lateral displacement of the secondary mirror and inclination of its optical axis with respect to the overall axis of the instrument are examined. The theory of third order aberration is applied to describe the case of forced rotation of the secondary mirror around the neutral point for stabilization of the image; it is shown that a coma is absent. The coma arising from rotation of the secondary mirror about its apex in Cassegrain and Ritchey-Chretien systems is analyzed, and expressions are derived which permit calculation of the permissible rotation for all double-mirror telescope systems. It is shown that for equivalent Cassegrain and Ritchey-Chretien systems the axial comas produced by a given inclination of the secondary mirror are the same.
