An HI survey of the Virgo cluster recently detected several isolated HI clouds. One, VIRGOHI21, shows clear evidence of rotation in its HI spectrum (Davies et al. 2004): the HI mass, the total estimated mass, and the approximate size are all typical for galaxies. According to the Tully-Fischer relation, the galaxy should be of 12th mag in V; yet deep optical follow-up observations reveal a limit of 27.5 B mag arcsec**(-2), consistent with the sky background. VHI21 appears to be the first detection of a population of 'dark' galaxies often predicted by theory but whose detection had so far been elusive. An XMM-Newton observation is therefore essential to understand if VHI21 has the X-ray properties of 'normal' galaxies or if its 'dark' nature has implications for the X-ray emission.
