We propose two EPIC observations of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) W51C (G49.2-0.7). W51C is thought to be a remnant of a core-collapse supernova (SN), yet no stellar remnant has been established. Although a pulsar and/or pulsar wind nebula (PWN) candidate was detected by Chandra, low photon statistics did not allow detailed analyses. With the large effective area of XMM-Newton we will be able to clarify the nature of the pulsar/PWN candidate. Moreover, W51C shows significant signs of a shock-cloud interaction. However, there are no existing X-ray observations of sufficient quality to study the SNR shock wave. The proposed observations will enable us to determine the origin of the molecular shocks, indicated by emission from high velocity molecular gas and OH masers.
