Following the approval of the VLT project in December 1987, the basic design and the specifications of the first VLT instruments will have to be selected by 1990. The authors review here the background of ESO VLT instrument studies and the criteria and constraints which are likely to influence the final selection. Three instrument concepts are presented that are now being investigated in some depth.
