Up to now, telescope optics have been specified in terms of geometrical errors. This usually leads to tough specifications, which may not be fully justified for the new generation of large telescopes. It is essential to find a more accurate way to define specifications. Diffraction integrals are computed to obtain the telescope's imaging performances in the vacuum. A free atmosphere model is then introduced and the final long-exposure image is computed. Assuming excellent seeing conditions, these simulations will be used to determine how specifications should be written and to what amount they could be relaxed.
