Scientific paper

A support system for an 8-meter diameter borosilicate glass honeycomb
core mirror has been studied using finite-element analysis. Allowable
tolerances for the support forces have been determined, to meet a
specification requiring image degradation from the support to be less
than 0.05 arc second full width half maximum (FWHM) at the zenith.
