Interrelations between the nucleosynthesis of the light elements (D, He-3, He-4, and Li-7), the universal baryon density, and recent developments in particle physics are reviewed. The implications of a nonzero lepton number in particle physics is discussed, as are astrophysical upper and lower limits on the ratio of the present density of the universe to the closure density (Omega). It is concluded that nucleosynthesis compatibility areas can be obtained at all values of Omega from 0.02 to 1.5, provided nonzero lepton numbers are considered; therefore, the nucleosynthesis of the light elements does not necessarily imply a low density universe (Omega less than or equal to 0.1)
