The paper, which is full of photographs of the Mars surface, is the first Viking report from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Emphasis is on the landing procedure and mass spectroscopic redefinition of the Mars atmosphere. The first photograph taken on the surface by Viking 1 is presented as is the first panoramic view from the surface of Mars. A map is provided of the Viking 1 landing site - Chryse Planita - as is a map of Mars water channels.
