Plans to construct bigger extensive air shower arrays make sense only if there is a reasonable chance of determining the origin of at least some of the particles. We believe that there is such a chance in view of recent work including our own detailed analysis which indicates changes in the mass composition and the presence of significant anisotropies in the arrival directions. The `overview' will identify a number of potential sources in the Galaxy and address the problem of external sources, including postulated production by collapsing cosmic strings.
