A study which aims to demonstrate that ground based coronographs can observe coronal streamers and to give examples of the type of streamer properties that can be deduced from such observations is reported. Eclipse or balloonborne observations are not discussed. The emission line and white light (K coronagraph) observations relating to streamer electron density, magnetic field and polarization, population, intensity, large scale organization, rotation, temperature, and periodicities, are included. All known papers in this field are not reviewed but selected papers to demonstrate the types of work that can be done are used.
