The bow shock statistics of the Fairfield (1971) data have been increased by more than a factor of five by adding the HEOS 1 and HEOS 2 shock crossings, thus deriving a true three-dimensional representation of the bow shock. These shock crossings have been used to find with a least-squares technique a conic surface that best describes the shock, and the bow shock shape has been studied as a function of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) direction. It is concluded that when the IMF has a southward component the shock is one earth radius closer to the earth than when it has a northward component.
