Scientific paper

The fundamental physics which leads to the formation of either a laminar
or a turbulent shock in a collisionless plasma is reviewed. Magnetosonic
and whistler waves play important roles in determining the fine
structure of a shock, such as the bow shock formed ahead of the earth's
magnetosphere.
