Bow shock observations are organized into two classes, those for which the angle between the interplanetary magnetic field and the local normal to the shock surface is greater than 50 deg (quasi-perpendicular encounters), and those for which the angle is less than 50 deg (quasi-parallel). Quasi-perpendicular encounters are typically identified as monotonic transitions between the solar wind and the magnetosheath plasma. Laminar and turbulent structures are discussed, and the ratio of field magnitudes on the two sides of the shocks ranges between two and four in the near-earth region. Quasi-parallel encounters are accompanied by periodic fluctuations of the magnetic field whose amplitude is often so large as to be comparable with the expected shock gradient.
