Work of the early 1960's with regard to the earth's bow shock is reviewed. A plasma mechanism was sought to explain the sudden commencement of magnetic storms, leading to the formulation of equations for finite-amplitude disturbances propagating across a magnetic field in a cold plasma. The turbulent approach of Fishman et al. (1960) is discussed along with observations made by Pioneer I and Imp I. The work of Kellogg (1962) on plasma density and flow velocity is also considered, as well as his study on the upstream propagation of the disturbance caused by the magnetosphere.
