Eleven papers that highlight some of the discussions from a magma ocean workshop are presented. The workshop was sponsored by the Lunar and Planetary Institute/Lunar and Planetary Sample Team and was held in Burlingame, California in Dec. 1991. Various approaches are used in solving questions related to planetary magma oceans. The methods of investigation range from high-pressure experiments on the petrology and geochemistry of a crystallizing magma ocean to modeling the dynamics of a solidifying planet-scale magma body to the effect of giant impacts on magma ocean formation.
