It is shown that there is a simple relationship between the thermal diffusion coefficient alpha sub i and the thermal diffusion ratio for multicomponent gas mixtures. Asymptotic expressions are obtained for alpha sub i for the minor and major components of a three-component gas mixture. Alpha sub i is calculated in the three-component approximation for H, H2, He, O2, and Ar in the earth's atmosphere. Thermal diffusion of the principal neutral components O and N2 is studied in the binary gas approximation. It is shown that thermal diffusion has an influence on height concentration profiles of all neutral components in the upper atmosphere.
