An investigation has been made into the suitability of samples of the Modipe gabbro of Botswana for the determination of the intensity of the geomagnetic field in the early Precambrian. The total TRM method has been extended to include a.f. demagnetization studies over the whole coercivity spectra of NRM, TRM and saturation IRM before and after heating. The studies reveal that the problem of alteration on heating may be more serious than previous workers have supposed, since important changes in magnetic ``texture'' occur, which are not revealed by the usual bulk magneto-chemistry tests. The comparison of the coercivity spectra of Sat. IRM before and after heating was found to be a sensitive means of detecting these changes. Until a more complete understanding of the processes involved has been obtained, the use of a correction factor to allow for these changes is of doubtful validity. Some specimens pass even the most stringent test employed and the measurements yield a value of 0.48 +/- 0.02 oersteds (1.5 times the present value) for the equatorial field strength 2700 m.y. ago. This suggests that the formation of the core may have been essentially complete at this early stage in the Earth's history.
