Homogeneous reductions of IUE low resolution observations of the brighter W UMa contact binaries were analyzed in terms of the transition region line fluxes. The fluxes, together with X-ray data, were used to study emission strength dependence on the temperature of the emitting plasma and on the period of stellar rotation. The contact binaries are found to have similar transition region line fluxes irrespective of the period. However, the fluxes are much below values expected from a direct extrapolation of the data for the detached binaries of longer periods.
