Previous optical (photoelectric and spectroscopic) and IUE observations of the early type contact binary SV Cen were supplemented by UV measurements. Optical photometric data suggest variations of the mass loss rate on a time scale of a few years, while the analysis of UV resonance line profiles shows short-term stellar wind fluctuations. The UV continuum is dominated by a hot (100,000 K) radiation source. The release of rotational energy of asynchronously rotating stars can account for the observed UV excess.
