It is shown that ohmic dissipation plays an important part in the process of sunspot decay, and it is proposed that ohmic diffusion of a spot's magnetic field takes place in a thin boundary layer between the spot's magnetic flux tube and the photosphere. The analysis is conducted by assuming, in accordance with the equilibrium condition, that the umbral magnetic-field intensity remains constant during the diffusion process; diffusion of the magnetic field by convection in the vicinity of the spot after passage through the boundary layer is also taken into account. A critical umbral size is determined such that the dissipation rate for large sunspots is limited by the convective diffusion of the field. For these spots, the proposed theory yields a linear relation for the decrease in umbral area with time, which is in agreement with observations.
