The north-south cosmic-ray asymmetry is studied on the basis of average yearly stratospheric data and neutron-monitor data. The relation between the cosmic-ray asymmetry and the observed asymmetry of solar activity in the period from 1963 to 1974 is examined. It is shown that the observed cosmic-ray asymmetry is in antiphase with the asymmetry of solar activity. The relevant correlation coefficient is found to be maximum for the solar-activity asymmetry in the solar-latitude region extending from 10 to 30 deg. The mechanism responsible for the north-south cosmic-ray asymmetry is considered.
