It is generally accepted that planetary magnetic fields such as the earth magnetic field are permanently being generated by convective flows in the planets' interior. Magnetohydrodynamic models have been developed by several authors among others by Roberts and Busse which predict the spontaneous occurence of a magnetic field, if a swirling velocity field in an electrically conducting fluid exceeds a critical intensity. None of the theoretical models has been validated so far. At the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe a liquid sodium test facility has been constructed to prove the models of Roberts and Busse, which simulate certain features at the likely properties of the flow field in the earth's interior. The lecture outlines the conceptional design of the experiment and first experiences concerning its operation.
