Parker (1962) showed that the magnitude of the ring-current-induced magnetic disturbance at the earth's center is proportional to the total energy of hot particles. In this paper, Parker's result is generalized in such a way that the magnetic disturbance is expressed everywhere near the earth (including at the earth's surface) through moments of the pressure distribution of hot particles: an expansion is obtained for which Parker's result is the first approximation. It is noted that the derived formulas can be used to determine ring-current parameters from ground-based observations.
