Processes of star formation in normal and interacting galaxy disks will be reviewed. Observations of galaxies that cover a wide range of star-forming activities and interaction states suggest that local processes such as turbulence, gaseous self-gravity, and pressurized triggering by existing stars dominate the conversion of gas into new stars. These processes depend primarily on density once a certain threshold is exceeded. Global flows and interstellar shocks feed matter to the centers of galaxies during an interaction, and this increases the star formation rate there without changing the basic physical processes or density dependencies. The origin of the threshold and the nature of the star formation law will also be discussed.
