We request XMM-Newton observations of the only galactic super star cluster, Westerlund 1, in order to determine its point X-ray source content, the contribution of supernova remnants to diffuse emission and its integrated X-ray properties, which will serve as a template for the study of extragalactic starburst regions. Given the enormous population of massive stars observed in the cluster, we expect to find significant numbers of isolated O-type stars, colliding wind systems, supernova remnants and, perhaps, accreting black holes.
