We propose to make the first comparison of intracluster light in the X-ray and optical bands for four clusters of galaxies. We have developed a new approach that constrains the stellar light profile out to at least 0.5 Mpc. The sensitivity, wide field, and spectral capabilities of XMM-Newton will allow us to derive the total mass and gas mass profiles out to a similar radius and to answer 1] whether the observed variations in the stellar light profiles of similar clusters reflect differences in the mass profiles or in the evolution of the stellar intracluster medium? and 2] what are the relative contributions of gas and stars to the overall baryon fraction?
