The slant column emission rate of the NII 2143A doublet airglow has been determined to be 333 + or - 67 Rayleighs at a zenith angle of 87.6 deg by means of rocketborne spectrometry, at an altitude of 200 km. The photoionization of molecular nitrogen by solar extreme-UV radiation, and the photoelectron impact excitation of molecular nitrogen, are suggested as excitation mechanisms for the phenomenon.
