Midlatitude upper thermosphere vertical motion measurements conducted by high time resolution Doppler shift methods for the forbidden line O I 3P - 1D transition emission at night have detected oscillations with approximately 40 min periodicity and magnitudes as large as 50 m/sec. Oscillation behavior is ascribed to the passage of gravity waves through that region of the atmosphere, and measurement results indicate that individual, high time resolution zenith measurements of neutral thermosphere emissions cannot be used as reference winds with sufficient certainty.
